Digital street view 400

Aldi have submitted a new planning application, 2025/1182, for the old Guy Salmon site on Portsmouth Road

Aldi's new planning application is for a single-level store - as shown in their public consultation documents last year (see computer-generated street scene opposite).

Their earlier application for a two-storey structure was turned down on appeal, mainly due to the adverse affect it would have on the character of the area, and the overbearing impact of houses in Westville Road (see our earlier article).

The buildings in this latest application appear to have less impact on the surrounding area than did those in the 2021 application, although it is still significant for properties bordering in Westville Road.  And the application does not address the many issues of concern raised previously, namely:

  • the traffic it would generate
  • the potential of a supermarket to threaten the viability and vitality of the high street shops
  • the consequences of the loss of the cycle lane in both directions in the vicinity of the store
  • the small size of the car park and the resulting impact on parking in near by residential roads
  • the impact on neighbouring residents, particularly in Rythe Court and Westville Road, of noise, light pollution, disturbance etc from deliveries and operating hours 7 days a week, from early morning to until well into the evening etc.

Public comments on this latest application are invited by 5 September 2025, although any submissions a little after this are also likely to be considered.  We would encourage residents to submit their views on the application to Elmbridge Borough Council.  The TD & WG Residents' Association will be submitting its comments in due course.
