The Lamb and Star was named from the insignia of the West and East Surrey Regiments in which men of Weston Green served and died. It was built along Weston Green Road well before Hampton Court Way existed. In the photograph below, seen across Milbourne Pond, the old Lamb is to picture left of Alice Haywood's haberdashery (with the awning) and the words 'ALES & STOUT WINES & SPIRITS' can be made out above the lantern over the entrance door of the pub, when the photo is enlarged:
When Hampton Court Way was built in 1932, both the haberdashery and the Lamb were demolished along with the house on the other side of the Lamb. The Lamb was rebuilt on the Esher side of Hampton Court Way:
The Lamb was a lively place (see 'Teens in the Pub') but declined somewhat as a pub during the early part of the 2000s. It was refurbished and reopened as 'The Ewe' in 2007. The partnership that has owned it has run it well, with a good atmosphere and good food, nicely served. Alas one of the partners has pulled out and what is now the Ewe is being sold on. Perhaps the name will change back as part of this process?
