Only in England. This was one of those representational occasions to cherish in the memory. It wasn't meant to be quite like this..... Villagers gathered in the pouring rain, carols were sung, Tricia made a long speech, actress Lesley Nicol - a real trouper - operating out of the undertaker's in one of those fortuitous scenes photographers relish, announced the Grand Switch On and - the Lime Tree lights failed! Rain got into the works. But the new mini Christmas trees mounted along the shop fronts came on with their automatic timers, and the village looked pretty. Priceless to all who prize English weather and custom,the phlegmatic outlook, and the eccentricities of village life.
