To celebrate 25 years of Neighbourhood Watch we are holding a Neighbourhood Watch ‘drop in’ meeting at Sandown race course, Esher on Thursday 18th October between 7PM to 9PM. Present will be a number of our partners and workshops for you to attend. I know it is short notice but the generosity of Sandown have meant we could not ignore this opportunity. This event is for everyone across Elmbridge. Information and literature will be available to pass onto your neighbours, so come along and bring a friend or neighbour.

During the recent process of updating member records seven email groups have been formed: Claygate, Cobham/Downside/Stoke, Esher, Molesey/Dittons and Hinchley Wood, Oxshott, Walton/Hersham, Weybridge. PC Mark Howells, Elmbridge's Crime Reduction Advisor, will circulate relevant, informative and useful advice, consisting of a bi-monthly article, specific crime warnings when criminal trends are identified and monthly snippets of information.

Further news and information

Elmbridge has around 14,000 Neighbourhood Watch members of which 8,000 are in Molesey and Dittons.

Denise Morris is a new volunteer for Elmbridge and is based at Walton Police Station, working her way through the current database and asking for email addresses as the intention is to create a regular Elmbridge information flow and possibly to circulate the newsletters by email.

SATELLITE NAVIGATION CRIME INCREASES

Thieves are targeting vehicles right across the road transport spectrum. Satellite Navigation systems are easy pickings for criminals as they are portable, small and expensive. Criminals break into a vehicle and take them within seconds as they are usually stuck to a windscreen via a cradle and suction pads. A thief seeing the cradle might break into the vehicle in the hope that the device is still on board. Even if it is not, the vehicle owner suffers the inconvenience and cost of the damages caused. You should remove the cradle and wipe off any suction marks on the windscreen as these marks can be a giveaway.

DO NOT LEAVE THE UNIT IN THE VEHICLE TAKE IT WITH YOU.

Use a UV pen to mark the equipment with your postcode or registration number, if it is stolen, and recovered at a later date, it can then be returned to you.

ADVICE RECEIVED FROM THE SURREY POLICE

Please be aware of the possible increase in criminals claiming to be from Water Companies. There has been some evidence of them using the current drought situation to con their way into peoples homes. The present simple advice of STOP - CHAIN - CHECK is still the way to encourage the elderly and vulnerable to deal with callers like this, and if at all suspicious to call the police. Any genuine caller will not mind being kept on the doorstep while their identity can be verified.

Also be aware of "Brighton" or "Nottingham" knockers. Groups of young people selling overpriced cleaning equipment or smartly suited men with meaningless ID cards. They offer you a poor price and may return to burgle your property.

DON'T BUY OR SELL AT THE DOOR

Surrey trading standards advise of bogus people selling garden furniture door to door, saying there has been a fire at the warehouse. If in your neighbourhood call CONSUMER DIRECT for action on 0845 4040506.

ARSON TASK FORCE

With rising Arson attacks in Surrey an Arson Task Force was formed in March 2005, a partnership between the fire, rescue service and the police. They are already successfully reducing incidents and bringing more offenders to justice. For more information contact 01737 733693 or anonymous answer phone 01737 243376.
