Claygate Folk Dance ClubPam Phillips01372 373745 English Country Dance: not Morris Dance, not line dancing, not couple dancing but people dancing in a group, or set, to varied styles of music, usually using straight forward steps. You don't need to come with a partner, although if you have a friend the more the merrier. You just ask someone (or they ask you) to dance and, with them, take your place in the set. For each evening there is a caller who instructs you, walks the dance through and calls it to the music. You don't have to know complex steps; you do have to learn simple movements such as stars, circles, swings etc and like all dancing you do need to acquire a sense of timing and direction. The interest and fun comes from the social side, the music and the patterns. Age range usually from empty-nesters through to those enjoying an active maturity. We would like to attract younger people but recognise that joining an older group is not always ideal. The Claygate Club, for example, meets each Thursday evening in Thames Ditton at St Nicholas' Church Hall but also runs 10 Saturday dances a year in Claygate for those who have learned the ropes, to live music with nationally known callers. Charges are very reasonable and are payable by event.
